Southampton manager Stuart Gray is giving a trial to Juventus striker Alessandro Ambrossi as he steps up his search for a goalscorer.

Ambrossi (30) is spending the next week training with the Premiership side with a view to a permanent move to Saints after being recommended to Gray by Juventus director of football and Italian national team legend Roberto Bettega.

Southampton have failed to score in their opening two league games this season and have scored just six goals in their last 11 Premiership matches.

Gray turned to Ambrossi after failing to agree personal terms with German captain Oliver Bierhoff, who has now joined Monaco. He is also interested in signing Brighton's £2.5 million sterling-rated striker Bobby Zamora.

Gray said: "It's an urgent priority to get a striker, and I think Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink showed that against us at the weekend when he scored for Chelsea with his only chance".
