Minister of State for Primary Care Alex White has said criminal proceedings could be considered in the Tuam babies case if it was deemed appropriate by prosecuting authorities.

Mr White was opening a primary care centre in Summerhill, Co Meath.

“We have to do absolutely everything that we can conceivably do to eastablish what happened and to take any action that can be taken at this remove,” he said.

“That will be anything up to and including criminal proceedings, were the prosecuting authorities to deem that that was appropriate.

“It’s something that happened in another time but that doesn’t make it any less shocking to people now.”
