The American rock band Smashing Pumpkins played a secret millennium concert in Dublin last night, three years after their 1996 concert in the Point Depot ended in the death of a young fan, writes Kevin Courtney.

The band returned to Dublin in June last year, playing a concert at the Olympia Theatre which was televised by RTE. Last night's concert in Vicar Street featured material from their forthcoming album, Machina/The Machines Of God, which will be released on February 29th.

Smashing Pumpkins were formed in Chicago in 1988 and reached megastar status with their 1995 album, Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness, which became the biggest-selling double CD in recording history.
