A young family with an 18-month-old son escaped injury in a gun attack on their home in Ballymena, Co Antrim, writes Monika Unsworth, in Belfast. A shot was fired at their front door shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday while the couple and their child were asleep upstairs.

Meanwhile, two men were recovering in hospital after separate paramilitary-style punishment shootings in west Belfast on Thursday night. In the first incident, a man, aged 30, was shot in the hands and ankles in the Beechmount Parade area at 10 p.m. A second man, aged 26, was found in the Moyard Crescent area with gunshot wounds to his elbows and ankles.
