Sinn Fein is denying there has been a change in its policy towards the RUC after two of its Assembly members took part in a courteous meeting with a senior police officer at Stormont.

The party chairman, Mr Mitchel McLaughlin, and the South Down MLA, Mr Mick Murphy, took part in an environment committee meeting yesterday.

It included a presentation by the RUC Chief Inspector, Mr Lawrence Hillar.

The committee is currently compiling a report on the safety of school transport.

In the past, Sinn Fein has criticised Catholic schools for inviting RUC road safety officers to speak to children, but Mr McLaughlin and Mr Murphy were courteous to Mr Hillar and his associate, Constable Norman Millar.

Mr McLaughlin suggested setting up two pilot schemes - one urban, one rural - to assess a US law preventing drivers from passing stationary school buses.
