Gardaí at Clontarf in Dublin are investigating an attempted armed robbery this morning in which a security firm employee was shot in the foot.
At about 7.45am, three masked raiders tried to rob a security van at the Vernon Avenue/ Clontarf Road junction. The van was delivering cash at an ATM.
At least one shot was fired, and an employee of the security company was injured in the foot. The three raiders fled the scene empty handed, according to gardaí.
The injured man, who is in his mid 20s, was taken to the Mater hospital.
The road has been closed while the scene is being examined. Gardaí at Clontarf are asking anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them on 01 6664800.
Siptu security sector organiser Kevin McMahon condemned the shooting this morning.
“Changes in the operation of the vans makes these attacks as futile as they are vicious”, he said.
“We would ask the media to highlight the fact that the old tactic of grabbing one of the crew and threatening to shoot them, or actually shooting him in this case, is pointless as staff in the vans no longer have access to the cash.”
