A second senior doctor has resigned from the board of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS).

Prof Shaun McCann, president of the Irish Haematology Society and director of the National Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at St James's Hospital, Dublin, resigned in a letter to the Minister for Health, Mr Martin.

His resignation follows that of Dr Fred Jackson, consultant haematologist with the South-Eastern Health Board, earlier this year.

Prof McCann, a professor of haematology at Trinity College, Dublin, said last night that a heavy workload had led to his decision.
