Fears that a violent campaign has been mounted against prison officers in Limerick city intensified today after it emerged shots were fired over a house.

Gardaí confirmed they were investigating an incident in which two shots were fired over the home of a prison officer early yesterday morning.

Last Monday, the same prison officer's car was petrol-bombed by three masked men, who were seen fleeing from the scene.

So far no one has been injured in the attacks, which included yesterday's attack in the Huntsfield area of the city.

On Wednesday, a suspicious device was left on the doorstep of another prison officer's home in the Shelbourne Road area in the north of the city.

Army Bomb Disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion but found the device to be a hoax.

The Prison Officers' Association has condemned the attacks.
