Russia's RTR state television aired brief footage today of what it said was a spy from the US embassy, secretly filmed attempting to recruit a Russian agent.

The state RIA news agency said the decision to air the pictures was intended as retaliation for Washington's unfriendly act last week - expelling four diplomats and asking a further 46 to leave by July.

RTR broadcast the brief clip of grainy footage, apparently shot inside a restaurant or bar, at the end of its 5 p.m. news (2 p.m. Irish time). It said it would show a full report on its next news programme, three hours later.

RIA said the footage was filmed by the FSB security police.
