Retrial ordered for Carlow man

A man has been freed by the Court of Criminal Appeal after it quashed his conviction for membership of the IRA.

A man has been freed by the Court of Criminal Appeal after it quashed his conviction for membership of the IRA.

In setting aside Mark Doran’s conviction, the three- judge appeal court directed that a retrial take place.

Mr Doran (29), Poacher’s Lock, Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, was convicted in 2007 of membership of the IRA on October 26th, 2006.

He was jailed for four years at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin. Mr Doran, who had pleaded not guilty, appealed his conviction.

The court yesterday said it was not satisfied it had been established Mr Doran was guilty of the charge.
