The Department of the Environment has promised to respond within a week to complaints about four waste disposal facilities following a warning from the European Commission.

The Commission has indicated it is sending a formal warning letter to the Government because of a failure to provide information about the facilities.

Between February and June this year the Commission asked the Government for information about waste disposal at the Poolbeg Peninsula, Co Dublin; at municipal waste facilities at Kilbarry and Tramore, Co Waterford; at Drumnaboden, Muckish and Glenalla, Co Donegal; and at Lea and Ballymorris, Co Laois.

"They all concerned waste sites where somebody has complained. The letters should be answered within two months," a Commission spokeswoman said.

A spokesman for the Department of the Environment said the delay in answering the letters could be explained by the difficulty of collecting information from disparate sources. "Every effort is made to respond as quickly as possible," he said.
