Nascar motor racing legend Dale Earnhardt snr died in a crash in the first race of the year yesterday on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in Florida.

Earnhardt, a seven-time Nascar Winston Cup champion, was aged 49.

Going into turn four Earnhardt's car appeared to touch the Dodge of Sterling Marlin and turned sideways. The Pontiac of Ken Schrader slammed into his car, taking both of them into the fourth turn wall.

"I guess someone got into Dale because Dale got into me and we went up. We hit pretty hard and Dale hit harder," said Schrader, who was uninjured.
