The RUC was mounting a security operation in a rural area of Co Antrim this morning after an explosion at a public house near Aldergrove airport last night, reports Gerry Moriarty.

The blast happened at around 10.20 p.m. There were no reports of any injuries and, according to police, damage to McKenna's pub near Aldergrove was slight.

Early today police were investigating at least one other bomb alert at a pub in the general vicinity.

Police and the British army bomb squad were quickly on the scene and the area around McKenna's was cordoned off as they tried to establish the cause of the explosion.

The pub is located on the Ballyginniss Road, about two miles from Belfast International Airport at Aldergrove, which is 20 miles from Belfast.

The pub is Catholic-owned, although its clientele is mixed, said local SDLP councillor Mr Oran Keenan, who lives only a few minutes from McKenna's. He said an explosive device was left on a windowsill of the pub. There appeared to be little structural damage, he added.
