A number of protesters have today begun a blockade of the Israeli embassy in Dublin.

This is the seventh protest organised by members of the Irish Anti-War Movement outside the embassy on Pembroke Road in Ballsbridge since the killing of nine Turkish peace activists by Israeli defence forces on May 31st.

Protesters are calling for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador to Ireland and for the Government to break diplomatic and economic ties with Israel over its policies in Gaza.

Israel last week released an impounded Turkish aid ship on which its defence forces killed nine pro-Palestinian activists in the as they tried to run the Gaza Strip blockade in May.

The clash severely damaged Israel's ties with its only close Muslim ally and drew international criticism that forced the Israelis to ease land commerce with Gaza's 1.5 million mostly aid-dependant Palestinians.

Israel defended the marines' use of guns in brawls with Mavi Marmara passengers, who it said had endangered the soldiers' lives by attacking them with iron bars and knives.
