The Pro-Life Campaign has launched its campaign for a Yes vote in next month's abortion referendum arguing it will protect the unborn and the health of mothers.

The Campaign said the Government's legislation would restore legal protection to the unborn, while guaranteeing the medical treatment currently offered to pregnant women. "This ensures that the unborn child from implantation in the womb is completely protected in law. This is what we wanted," Dr Bernie Kelly.

Meanwhile, in the Dáil, the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, defended the decision to rule out suicide as a ground for abortion, because, he said, this would lead to an increase in the numbers seeking abortion.

"We did not rule out suicide as a reason to legislate for abortion because we are insensitive to women or as some have suggested, because we did not trust them," Mr Ahern said.
