A post mortem on the body of a newborn baby found yesterday in a shallow grave in north-west Co Mayo has revealed that the pregnancy went full term and the baby was born some time last week but that it only lived for a very short time.

There are reportedly no injuries on the body according to the post mortem carried out by the State Pathologist, Dr. Marie Cassidy.

The body of the baby boy was found by youths on land at Killgalligan near Ballina.

Gardaí have urged the mother to contact them or seek medical assistance, giving assurances that she would be treated "with sympathy and confidence".

Garda officer heading the investigation, Chief Supt Tony McNamara said the birth appeared to have been unassisted and renewed his appeal for the mother to come forward. He said in cases like this the mothers can develop complications.
