An investigation is under way in Limerick after a pipe bomb was thrown into a halting site on the outskirts of the city.

The device, which exploded, was thrown into the halting site, which is home to a number of families, on the Ballysimon Road shortly before 10pm on Sunday. Nobody was injured in the incident and none of the caravans was damaged.

Residents in the halting site alerted gardaí after hearing a loud bang at about 9.50pm.

The scene was sealed off for technical examination.

Gardaí say the halting site, which is not an official halting site but has been home to a number of Traveller families for many years, had not come to their attention in the past.

Detectives are still working on a motive for the pipe bomb attack.
