Mark Philippoussis's participation in this month's Australian Open is in serious doubt after he was forced to pull out of the Hopman Cup because of a groin injury.

The Australian, whose career has been beset by injury suffered an adductor strain in Australia's defeat to the Netherlands yesterday.

Philippoussis is due to hold a media conference later today to reveal the specific extent of his injury.

The Australian Open begins in Melbourne on January 17th.
