A British Midlands flight was forced to fly to Shannon because it lacked the fuel to wait for a landing spot at Dublin airport, it was claimed yesterday.

According to a caller on RTÉ radio's Liveline yesterday, Wednesday's 6pm flight from Heathrow to Dublin was forced to change its course after being unable to land at Dublin airport.

The aircraft then climbed to altitude but, instead of joining a queue circling the airport, it flew to Shannon, where it landed safely.

Passengers were not informed of the reason the flight had been diverted until after landing in Shannon, when the pilot told passengers that the flight had not had enough fuel left to circle Dublin airport. The caller, a passenger on the flight, said they were told the aircraft could not land in Dublin because the pilot could not see the end of the runway.
