A Dutch passenger jet has been forced to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport. The plane, with 281 passengers on board, was en route to Miami from Amsterdam.

The Martin Air 767 Boeing aircraft is understood to have declared an emergency some 200 miles off the Irish coast after the crew reported a "strong smell" on board which they failed to identify.

It was then rerouted to Shannon, the nearest available airport, where it made an emergency landing shortly after 3.30 p.m.

Emergency services at Shannon were in attendance the plane landed. The passengers have been taken off and the plane is currently being examined.
