Seoul - South Korea's two major opposition parties announced they had agreed to join forces to field a joint candidate for next month's presidential election. A joint statement from the two parties said Mr Kim Dae-jung, leader of the main opposition National Congress for New Politics, would become the joint opposition candidate.

The governing New Korea Party, which has never lost a presidential election, is currently teetering on the brink of an acrimonious break-up.
