Paris - The French government came under growing pressure yesterday to avert a threatened road blockade by French truckers at the weekend, with European neighbours sounding alarm bells.

Talks between truckers and their employers resumed yesterday afternoon in an attempt to arrive at a solution before midnight tomorrow, a deadline set by the truckers for action similar to that which paralysed France for 12 days last November.

A government source said the Prime Minister, Mr Jospin, was willing to "accept his responsibilities" over the crisis - a hint that his government may intervene directly to resolve the issue.
