More than 2,000 Leaving Certificate pupils were celebrating higher grades today after demanding a re-mark.

More than 2,000 Leaving Certificate pupils were celebrating higher grades today after demanding a re-mark.

The State Examinations Commission has revealed that approximately 5,300 students had appealed over their results.

Some 51,000 pupils sat the Leaving Cert this summer, resulting in the issuing of 352,000 grades.

Students will be able to check their upgraded results at their schools or from noon today on www.examinations.ie.

"In the processing of appeals, the work of each candidate is fully re-marked question by question using the original marking scheme," said a spokesman for the State Examinations Commission.

"The re-marking is performed by a different examiner to the one who originally marked the work.

"Candidates who are dissatisfied with the outcome of their appeal have recourse to the Independent Appeals Scrutineers."

The role of the independent scrutineers is to ensure that due process has been followed in the case of each appeal and that all of the appeal procedures were properly carried out.
