Anglers face on-the-spot fines from this week if they are caught committing minor fishery offences.

Authorised officers of fisheries boards can now issue a £50 fine. No court action will result if fines are paid within 21 days. Mr Vincent Roche, manager of the North Western Fisheries Board, said the system was provided for in the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 2000.

Other offences covered include the taking of undersized fish, the illegal use of prawn and shrimp and the failure to produce a fishing licence. Mr Roche said the fines would save money for the board as it would cut down on court appearances.
