Bonn - For the first time since German unification eight years ago, the communists who once ruled the former East Germany are back in power, this time in a regional coalition government in the country's poorest state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Mr Helmut Holter, state leader of the party that is heir to the communist Socialist Unity Party said an alliance with the Social Democrats heralded a new era for eastern Germans.
