Niamey - Around four million people in Niger, or 39 per cent of the population, are threatened with famine because of poor cereals crops, the government said.

The Rural Development Minister, Mr Wassalke Boukari, told parliament this week that total production of cereals in the season that ended in September would be 2.32 million tonnes against forecast demand for 2.48 million.
