New Trinity Provost inaugurated today

The inauguration of the 43rd Provost of Trinity College Dublin took place today.

The inauguration of the 43rd Provost of Trinity College Dublin took place today.

Dr John Hegarty, from Claremorris, Co Mayo, begins his ten-year term, succeeding current Provost Dr Thomas Mitchell.

Dr Hegarty has been Dean of Research and Head of the Department of Physics at Trinity, Adjunct Professor to the University of Georgia and Visiting Professor to the University of Tokyo and Sony Corporation, Japan.

He is a member of the Higher Education Authority, Advisory Board to Science Foundation Ireland in Information and Communications Technologies and has produced over 140 journal publications.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr Hegarty said: "Trinity is the jewel in the crown of the city and we have a lot to offer each other."

He said he wanted to build cultural, social and research links between the college and Dublin.
