A new accident and emergency department at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children is to open at the weekend. The £10 million extension will make the hospital one of the best equipped of its kind in Ireland and Britain.

Its intensive care unit has space for 12 beds.

High-tech monitoring equipment is suspended from the ceiling instead of being situated beside patients.
