A murder inquiry is under way following the death of a man who was assaulted at a taxi rank in Belfast city centre early on Sunday morning. Joe O’Neill (60), a native of Scotland, from Brooke Park, west Belfast, suffered multiple head wounds when he was attacked at 1.15am, according to police.

A barman and father of two teenage children, he moved to Belfast about 20 years ago. The PSNI appealed for witnesses yesterday and said it was treating his death as murder. A 34-year-old man, who was arrested before Mr O’Neill’s death, is in custody in relation to the assault.
