A Dublin man accused of murdering a 15-year-old girl told gardai he felt like a "scumbag" and he "didn't mean it", the Central Criminal Court heard yesterday.

Mr Keith Kelly (23), of Colepark Drive, Ballyfermot, denies murdering Melanie Gleeson (15) in the grounds of a convent at Lynch's Lane, Ballyfermot, on or about October 31st, 1995. He has admitted manslaughter.

Det Sgt Gabriel O'Gara told the court that Mr Kelly was interviewed as a witness shortly after the body of Ms Gleeson was found. During that interview he said: "I didn't mean it, I didn't mean it, I was with Melanie."

The trial continues today.
