Scotland Yard said yesterday a deputy assistant commissioner will be brought in to replace Mr John Stevens, the new Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, in overseeing the day-to-day operation of the fresh investigation into the murder of the Belfast solicitor, Mr Pat Finucane.

The announcement will be made within the next two weeks, a Scotland Yard spokeswoman said. Mr Stevens is due to take over as Commissioner when the present head of the Metropolitan Police, Mr Paul Condon, leaves the post on January 1st.
