THE Minister for Education is to restore the governance and management of Letterkenny RTC, two years after it was replaced by a Commission appointed by Ms Breathnach after a report commissioned by her Department criticised the running of the college.

The county manager of Donegal County Council, Mr Michael McLoone, will be chairman of a new governing body to be formed on or before December 4th 1996 At that point the Commission will be terminated. Mr Micheal O Neill, the acting Commissioner, will stay on as temporary director of the college until a permanent appointment is made.

In December 1994, the Commission was appointed to carry out all the functions of the governing body following a report by Dr Miriam Hederman O'Brien which was heavily critical of the running of the college. She discovered unauthorised borrowing, inadequate procedures for selecting staff, including allegations of favouritism in promotions, and flawed financial management systems.

The chairman of the governing body, Mr Bernard McGlinchey, resigned on the day the report's findings were made public in October 1994.
