A packaging levy is being considered by the Department of the Environment.

Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan said no decision had been made on the matter, but the department would “examine options” regarding the introduction such a charge.

A consultation process will seek views, he said.

Among the issues to be considered are how a levy might be operated, how it could be structured to reduce packaging waste and experience internationally of similar levies.
