Microsoft has reached a settlement in most of the private anti-trust cases filed against it.
The company is to provide more than $1 billion (£714m) worth of software, training and computers to thousands of America's poorest schools over five years.
The settlement ends most of the private cases alleging it abused its monopoly in the software market and overcharged millions of computer buyers.
However, it must first be approved by Judge Frederick Motz in Baltimore, who is overseeing the class-action suits.
Michael Hausfeld, representing a group of private plaintiffs in Washington DC, says the deal has yet to be signed, although the two sides have agreed to terms.
