A teenager, who received more than 200 stitches to a face wound inflicted in a hatchet attack, was a member of a gang which assaulted two brothers in an unprovoked fracas in Cork's city centre last year.

Gregory Carmody, of Templeacre Avenue, Gurranabraher, pleaded guilty to assaulting brothers Graham and Roy Knox occasioning them actual bodily harm in the Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Carmody (18) was a member of a six man gang that attacked the brothers at Marlboro Street for no apparent reason with an iron bar. It was accepted another person used this weapon.

The brothers both required hospital treatment and had to have wounds to the head and neck stitched.

Carmody paid £2,000 compensation to his victims and was ordered by Judge AG Murphy to pay a further £1,000. He apologised for what he did. He said he was attacked a few months prior to the incident with a hatchet and received a face wound which required 200 stitches. Judge Murphy adjourned the case until November and said he would suspend the prison sentence if compensation is paid in full.
