Swimming: Irish swimmer Sycerika McMahon has won her second gold medal at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Belgrade, breaking her own national record by two seconds in the process.
The Leander SC swimmer led the 400 freestyle from start to finish, posting a time of 4:13.85 ahead of Britain’s Rachel Williamson (4:14.49) and Johanna Friedrich of Germany (4:14.59).
Yesterday, McMahon won her first gold of the championships when setting a new Irish record in the 50m breaststroke.
Tomorrow, she will swim in the 200m freestyle - in which she is ranked first - and the 100m butterfly.
Also today, Bangor SC swimmer Luke Campbell finished outside his best in a time of 52.17 seconds in the 100m freestyle and missed out on a semi-final spot, while Conor Turner (Aer Lingus SC) finished in 16:05.78 in the 1500m freestyle, 11th overall.
Philip Duffy (St Paul’s SC) and Nicholas Quinn (Castlebar SC) were both unable to progress tot eh semi-finals of the 200m individual medley. Duffy finished in a time of 2:11.89 and Quinn in 2:13.57.
There are four other Irish in the pool tomorrow, with Jane Roberts (Kilkenny SC) set to swim the 200m freestyle and the 50m backstroke.
Quinn, Peter Clarke (Limerick SC & HPC-UL) and Dan Sweeney (Sunday’s Well SC) will take to the blocks in the 50m breaststroke heats.
Heats begin at 8am (Irish time) and semi-finals/finals start at 4pm
