McAleese resumes African tour in Tanzania

President Mary McAleese today travels to Tanzania as part of her resumed trip to southern Africa.

President Mary McAleese today travels to Tanzania as part of her resumed trip to southern Africa.

The President broke off her official visit on Thursday to attend the State funeral of former taoiseach Charles Haughey in Dublin. She has already visited Lesotho and Mozambique as part of the original 11-day tour of the continent.

Mrs McAleese today meets Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete in the capital, Dar es Salaam.

The president, a former law professor, will also visit the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha on Wednesday. She will sit in on a trial and meet the tribunal judges.

Mrs McAleese will also visit the remains of a former slave market in Zanzibar and later address the Tanzanian parliament.

The presidential party, which includes Minister of State Conor Lenihan, is due back in Dublin on Friday.
