A race marshal was killed after being struck by a motorcycle during the Ulster Grand Prix.

A race marshal was killed after being struck by a motorcycle during the Ulster Grand Prix.

Mr Gerald Allaway (56) from Linley Drive in Comber, was dead on arrival at hospital after being taken from the road racing circuit at Dundrod, Co Antrim.

The accident occurred during the final lap of the Regal 600cc race last night. The motorcycle rider had been thrown from his machine before it carried on and struck Mr Allaway.

Earlier, two riders suffered broken limbs when they collided on the circuit.

Clerk of the course Mr Billy Nutt described it as a freak accident on a part of the circuit which had undergone new safety checks.

He said: "This incident will be fully investigated. There had been the task force report and one of the things that was part of the task force was putting the chicane in to slow them down and certainly it did that.

"But on the last lap it is always sort of a problem when guys are going all out for a win."
