A 32-year-old man charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of another man in Ballyfermot, Dublin, over the weekend was remanded into custody with consent to bail at Kilmainham District Court yesterday.

Martin Toland, Walkinstown Park, Walkinstown, is facing two charges. These relate to assault causing harm to the deceased, Alan Nolan (28), Cedarbrook Walk, Cherry Orchard and another man, James Carroll, who was injured during the incident.

Mr Carroll remains in hospital, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Mr Nolan died after he received a stab wound at an apartment in Cedarbrook Walk shortly after 6am on Saturday.

He was taken, along with Mr Carroll, to St James's Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Det Sgt Denis Smith of Ballyfermot Garda station told Judge Patrick McMahon that the accused had made no reply when the charges were put to him.

Judge McMahon remanded Mr Toland in custody with consent to bail on the condition that he stays away from Mr Carroll, signs on daily at Crumlin Garda station and remains at his Walkinstown address.

He will also have to provide his own bond of €200 and lodge an independent surety of €3,000 in cash with the court.

Mr Toland made no comment during the brief hearing. He is due to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on Friday morning.
