A Tallaght man involved in cannabis distribution, using a 30-foot pipe in the River Dodder Valley as a meeting place, has been jailed for six years by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. James Cunningham (20), of Kiltipper Close, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis valued at £25,000 for sale or supply on October 20th, 2000.
Judge Elizabeth Dunne said she recognised Cunningham was not the big player in the operation and had pleaded guilty at the earliest possible stage.
"I have a degree of discretion in what sentence should be imposed but I can't ignore the amount of drugs involved or the seriousness of the offence."
Gardai arrested six men on October 20th in the vicinity of the valley but charges were only brought against Cunningham whom they arrested as he came out one end of the pipe carrying a satchel containing the drug.
