A man has appeared in court in connection with an assault that left a Roscommon publican with a broken nose and around 30 stitches in his face.

Ned Gilligan was attacked in his pub, the Green Rooster on Church Street in Roscommon town, last night.

It is understood that he was attacked when he asked a group of four men who were drinking in the bar to leave.

One of the group reportedly hit Mr Gilligan on the head with a bar stool. He was also hit in the face with a pool cue.

Another staff member was also attacked after he tried to help Mr Gilligan. A customer was also punched in the face during the incident.

One man was arrested and appeared in court today. He was remanded to appear in Roscommon District Court next Tuesday.
