A young electrician left permanently hospitalised with severe brain damage and other serious injuries after he was struck and thrown into the air by a car driven by an uninsured driver in Dublin has been awarded €3.3 million damages by the High Court.
John Mahony (33), who has been in hospital since the incident in October 2000, is permanently disabled and will require medical care for the rest of his life. Prior to the accident, he was an active sportsman but now suffers significant depression.
Through his father Gerard Mahony, he sued Thomas Paul McGillivary, West Road, East Wall, Dublin, the uninsured driver of the car involved.
Mr Justice Richard Johnson yesterday ruled a settlement of €3.3 million. It was claimed on behalf of Mr Mahony that he was struck by a vehicle driven by McGillivary while crossing the Clontarf Road. McGillivary had crossed suddenly to the wrong side of the road.
