A Man is to appear before Longford District court today charged with an offence relating to the death of an 18-year-old man in the town early yesterday.

The dead man was named as Mr christopher Farrell, of Richmond Close, Longford.

He was pronounced dead in the grounds of St Joseph's Hospital at 4.30 a.m. after being stabbed during a fight in the town earlier in the night. The man's body was examined by hospital doctors in a car being driven to the hospital by his friends.

A 24-year-old local man was arrested by gardai yesterday afternoon and was charged shortly before midnight with an offence relating to the incident.

Gardai in Longford said a full investigation was under way, althoiugh it was at an early stage.

The stabbing is said to be related to a fight which broke out at a local disco between two groups pof youths.

The State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, was carrying out a post-mortem last night and the results are expected today.

The Garda Technical Bureau has been gathering evidence from the car where the victim's body was found.

Local gardaiwere last night searching for the knife used in the attack and calls were made to houses in the area where the attasck took place.
