A man has died after being struck by a Luas tram in Tallaght.

A man has died after being struck by a Luas tram in Tallaght.

The man, who is in his late 50s, was hit by the Red Line tram at Cookstown Way between the Tallaght and Hospital stops on Saturday evening.

He died in Tallaght hospital yesterday morning.

A spokeswoman for Luas operator Veolia said it had begun an investigation into the incident. She also extended the company's sympathies to the victim's family.

It is the first fatality involving a Luas since the service was introduced in 2004.

A number of people have been injured by trams, most recently a man who was knocked down near Tallaght in December, suffering serious head injuries.

A total of 17 incidents were recorded of "contact" between Luas trams and other road users in 2007, down from 18 the previous year. Not all of  these incidents resulted in injury.
