Up to 15 vehicles, including three articulated trucks, were involved in a pile-up on the southbound M7 Dublin to Limerick road earlier today.

The crashes, which took place between junctions 16 and 17 at Portlaoise shortly after 8.15am, occurred during a period of dense fog. The road, which was closed earlier, has now reopened.

Although one of the truck drivers was taken to hospital, no serious injuries were reported. According to AA Roadwatch, three crashed trucks and a number of other crashed vehicles were removed from the scene.

Earlier, motorists were warned there was a lot of debris and fuel on the road, and traffic was diverted off at junction 16 through Portlaoise.

Visibility was said to be very bad this morning, and drivers were urged to reduce speed significantly and avoid the area if possible.
