Two explosions rocked homes in the northern part of Kilkenny city yesterday evening as firefighters tackled a blaze at a local tool-hire compound.

Toxic fumes filled the air and traffic was brought to a standstill as the Castlecomer Road, one of the city's main traffic arteries, was closed for a number of hours. Fire services prevented the blaze spreading to a nearby oil depot. The alarm was raised after 5 p.m.
