A judge yesterday rejected a settlement of more than £35,000 offered to an 11 year old boy whose leg was broken when a free standing goalpost he had climbed toppled over. The accident occurred at the GAA pitch in Conna, Co Cork, on July 1st, 1994.

Ronan Carr, of Curraglass, sued Mr Michael Lane and Mr William O'Connell as trustees of Conna Muintir Community Council and St Catherine's GAA club.

Mr Justice Peter Kelly turned down a settlement offer of £35,491 - including special damages - saying the offer did not reflect the true value of the case after he heard medical evidence that the boy would require serious surgery when he was fully grown.
