Formula One:Former team boss Eddie Jordan today insisted the record fine imposed on McLaren over the Formula One spy row "doesn't seem logical".

The team were punished at a World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) hearing in Paris yesterday after fresh evidence emerged in their row with rivals Ferrari over leaked technical information.

McLaren were also docked all their points in the constructors' championship, though the points totals of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in the drivers' championship remain untouched.

Jordan, the former owner of an F1 team of the same name, believes the size of the fine - almost $100million (€72m) - leaves the sport's world governing body with little room for manoeuvre if something similar was to occur between smaller, less wealthy teams.

Jordan told the BBC's Breakfast programme: "It is baffling. It doesn't seem logical at all in terms of the amount of money, the penalty."

He said big teams such as McLaren and Ferrari could easily afford to pay such a fine but feared the smaller teams would struggle.

Alonso and Hamilton were promised immunity from punishment by the FIA if they gave a full and frank disclosure to the WMSC hearing.

"The FIA came out and said if there was a full disclosure by the drivers of all the email traffic and any type of information flow between drivers and engineers then they would be immune to any kind of punishment," Jordan added.

"I thought that was a good way of doing things from the FIA's side. The people at large, particularly the tabloids, will absolutely kill the FIA if they interfere with the potential prospect of having the rookie of the year (Hamilton) not get the championship. I think the FIA were very clever in making sure this wasn't a conflict."

Jordan added: "To the outside world this is a ridiculous amount of money, and we also need to know where is this money going to?"
