The Irish womens hockey team lost 1-0 after a controversial last-minute goal gave hosts USA victory in a friendly international in San Francisco today.

Former under-21 players Deirdre Casey (Cork Church of Ireland), Nicky McCaughern (Ballymoney) and Kristin Farrell (Waterford) all made their senior debuts as the Irish held their own for most of the match.

However, a bizarre decision - for which the umpire later apologised, allowed Tracy Fuchs to score the resulting penalty corner for the only goal of the game.
