Winners of €12.9m Lotto jackpot come forward

Supervalu in south Dublin suburb of Knocklyon celebrates selling lucky ticket

A syndicate has come forward to claim Wednesday’s Lotto jackpot worth about €12.9 million.

The winners contacted National Lottery headquarters before the close of business on Thursday. It has not been confirmed yet whether they intend to go public on their success.

The ticket was sold in the Supervalu in Knocklyon, Co Dublin.

Not many shop managers get to celebrate selling a multimillion euro lottery ticket once. However, the shop’s manager Ken O’Toole, has just done it for a second time.

The shop sold the winning ticket for Wednesday’s lottery. The winning “quick pick” selection ticket was bought on the day of the draw.

Ten years ago he was the manager of a Supervalu in Sutton when a customer scooped a lottery win worth €6.5 million. "I'm not a lucky person, I'm a lucky store manager," he said.

Customers to the busy suburban store in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains were greeted with champagne flutes and canapes as they entered.

Nobody present knew who the winner was butthe speculation was that it must be someone local as it is a rather out of the way supermarket and gets little in the way of passing trade.

“We got the word at 9am from the National Lottery to say we were the store that sold the winning ticket for the big draw,” Mr O’Toole said. “The word went around the shop. We have our own syndicates here. We’re all about being local so it must be someone local.”

Mr O’Toole said they sell thousands of lottery tickets and it could be anyone.

Local woman Terri Kenny said she was in two lottery syndicates and fielded several calls after the announcement was made.

“All my friends are texting me and calling me asking me, ‘was it you?’ I had to say no.”

The Lotto jackpot of €12.85 million is the biggest win of 2017.

The winning numbers were 2, 15, 19, 26, 37, 38 and the bonus number 39.

Another player in Co Laois won €179,034 in the same draw for the match five and bonus prize. The quick pick ticket was also sold at a Supervalu store but this supermarket was in Abbeyleix Road in Portlaoise.

The player or players with the winning ticket are advised to sign the back and call the prize claims team on (01) 8364444.

To date, about 20 jackpots worth more than €10 million have been won by players in the State. The largest Lotto win of almost €19 million was by the Dan Morrissey syndicate in Carlow on June 26th, 2008.

Last January, a Dublin work syndicate scooped €88.5 million in the EuroMillions jackpot.
